Monday Club — An American Christian Mini-Post IX
I wanted to take a few moments to thank everyone who has been reading and following us on this journey. There are several chapters still to go, it’s just a matter of getting them written with all of life still happening around us.
There have been several alumni and ex-members of the church I grew up in that have contacted me, as well as several others whom I’ve only spoken to because of this writing.
Thank you for your kind words, and thank you for reaching out.
This is taxing. It’s difficult to dredge up past wounds, instances that have been buried in my psyche for over a decade. I’m certainly not the only one this has affected. Every contributor has had to deal with the mental consequences of healing from this kind of trauma.
I know this has been triggering for many people as well, but I hope that this helps you feel safe and that you can find solace. I hope you feel less alone. There’s healing in this, as painful as it might be going through it.
From what I can tell, most of the traffic for these articles comes from Medium, for which I am endlessly grateful. I want to post links to our social media accounts, and I also wanted to ask you to share this, should you feel inclined. Like many people who have been affected positively by this here, countless others feel lost, isolated, and alone.
Church abuse is a vast and widespread issue that impacts people long after leaving the toxic environments that held them captive. This is all being published out in the open, so it doesn’t surprise me that church leaders and loyalists follow this account or the social accounts set up below.
Regardless of those people trying to infiltrate our safe spaces like a rejected Get Smart plotline, we outnumber them by legions. I’m also glad that they see this. I want them to. They need to.
Don’t be intimidated by toxic churches and their ilk. Some will try to shame you; others will try to slander you, claiming the reverse is happening. DO NOT LISTEN. They’re hurt too. They just don’t realize it.
